The landscape is dominated by the maunga that gives the village its name, the rounded volcanic peak of Maungatapere, which means ‘meeting place by the mountain’. Whatitiri and Maunu are other prominent maunga nearby. These three small volcanic cones are responsible the rich soils which are some of the most desirable in the country and help create a microclimate that has made the area popular for farming and growing.
